Week of March 1st – March 5th

Hi,

The beginning of this week we will focus on the Age of Jackson and the reform movements of the 1830s. On Wednesday, we will do some geography review to prepare for our next unit on the Civil War.  On Thursday and Friday we will begin to look at the sectional differences between the North and the South in the years leading up to the Civil War.

Week of February 22nd – February 26th

Hi,

This week in social studies we will wrap up our unit: Manifest Destiny in a Growing Nation.  On Monday and Tuesday we will focus on the Gold Rush of 1849 as well as the Indian Removal Act and Trail of Tears. On Wednesday, students will receive their progress report grade for social studies, then revisit the goals they set for 3rd quarter and determine if they are on track to meet those goals. Thursday we will review for Friday’s test.

Write a short journal entry (½-1 page) describing your trip across the country in search of gold in 1849.  Entries should be based on information learned in class.

Read Literature Worksheet #15:  Elizabeth Sullivan, A Story of the Trail of Tears and answer critical thinking questions 1-4.

Ticket-to-the-Test: This is an optional homework assignment that I give the night before EVERY test. Students are to create their own test questions AND answers (minimum of 10) based on the content of the unit. Those students who create the Ticket-to-the-Test can hand it in BEFORE the test and receive 3 bonus points on the test.

Hi,

This week we will continue with our unit: Manifest Destiny in a Growing Nation.  Most of the week will be spent on territorial expansion.  Students will learn when, why, and how the United States acquired various territories to complete its Manifest Destiny. On Friday, students will learn about the Gold Rush of 1849.

Week of February 8th – February 12th

Hi,

This week in social studies we will continue our unit: Manifest Destiny in a Growing Nation.

On Monday, we learn how the Louisiana Purchase and the War of 1812 opened the way for settlers to move out west.  We will examine the various reasons for westward movement, the various routes that the settlers traveled, and some of the hardships that they faced along the way.

The rest of the week we will focus on how the United States acquired various territories such as the Oregon Country, Texas Annexation, and the Mexican Cession.
